Liothyronine Sodium is used in the treatment of various thyroid problems.
The main purpose for which Liothyronine Sodium is used is to treat underactive thyroid i.e. hypothyroidism. Low thyroid hormones can happen under different circumstances. It can happen when the thyroid gland is injured by medication, radiation, removed by surgery or it may happen naturally too.
Liothyronine Sodium works by providing or replacing more thyroid hormone which is made by the thyroid gland under normal circumstances. It is basically a man made form of thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormone in the right quantity is essential to stay healthy. Hence it is extremely important that the normal level is restored using Liothyronine Sodium.
The usual starting dose of Liothyronine Sodium is 5 to 25 mcg per day. The dose of Liothyronine Sodium is adjusted after taking into consideration several factors such as age, weight, severity of condition, response to treatment and so on. Your doctor will prescribe you with the dose after examining you thoroughly.
Excess of Liothyronine Sodium can cause a wide range of side effects ranging from: headaches, mood alterations – irritability, nervousness, anxiety, sweating, abnormal heart rhythms, palpitations, chest pain, diarrhea, menstrual irregularities, worsening of heart failure, shock. Massive overdosage may result in symptoms resembling thyroid storm. Chronic excessive dosage will produce the signs and symptoms of hyperthyroidism.
