Description

Xenical (Orlistat) is a weight loss drug that is used to help overweight or obese patients lose weight. Xenical belongs to a class of drugs known as lipase inhibitors and when ingested, it acts in the stomach and prevents the body from absorbing any fat that has been consumed. As a result of this, the fat is passed out in the patient’s stools, which helps contribute to weight reduction. Weight loss treatment with Xenical usually involves a special reduced calorie diet plan that is low in fat and a comprehensive physical activity regime, so as to maximise the chances of successfully losing weight.

Patients who are taking Xenical (Orlistat) as part of an anti-obesity treatment plan must carefully follow the instructions given by their doctor. Patients are sometimes directed to take one capsule (120 mg) 3 times per day, alongside every main meal. Most people taking Xenical will be given comprehensive diet instructions, and told to distribute the calorie intake over three different meals. However, if the patient misses a meal from time to time, or if a meal which does not have any fat is eaten, the dosage is usually skipped.

Xenical (Orlistat) can cause side effects, some of which involve bowel movement changes. Most reactions are noticed at the start of treatment, but in some cases, patients may notice side effects throughout the course of taking this medicine. Some examples are listed here: Soreness in the rectum, Pain that affects the stomach, Flatulence and an oily leakage, Spotting visible on the underwear, Bowel movements which are hard to control.

Talk to your doctor about any side effects you experience during treatment. You must immediately get medical assistance if you notice discoloured urine, appetite loss, severe fatigue or any other serious symptoms.

If this drug is used on its own without exercise, patients may not be able to achieve satisfactory results. Patients who fail to reduce their bodyweight by a minimum of 5 per cent after 12 weeks of treatment may be directed by their doctor to stop treatment.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
