Description

Arimidex is a drug used to treat breast cancer that has metastasized. It belongs to a class of drugs called aromatose inhibitors which prevent the production of hormone estrogen, which is required for cancer cells to proliferate. Sometimes used to treat ovarian cancer that is estrogen dependent, the Arimidex is prescribed for post menopausal women whose cancer has not been controlled with other drugs. It is also used as a first line of treatment.

The recommended dosage of Arimidex is one 1 mg tablet to be taken once every day. Arimidex should be continued till the tumor progression for patients suffering from advanced breast cancer is controlled. You can take Arimidex with or without food.

Most common side effects of Arimidex are caused due to reduction in estrogen levels. These include hot flashes, breast pain, joint pain and arthritis. In order to prevent problems like osteoporosis, bone nourishment through supplements is essential. Many women also put on weight during treatment. Nausea and weakness are other common side effects during therapy. Anastrozole has been known to cause heart side effects like fluid accumulation (edema) and heart stroke, a condition that develops over a period of time as this drug may be prescribed for as long as five years.
