Vyfat containing the active ingredient Orlistat is considered a lipase inhibitor type of medication. Vyfat works by preventing some of the fat in foods consumed from being absorbed in the intestines and allowing the unabsorbed fat to be removed from the body in the stool. Vyfat should be used along with a low fat, low calorie diet, a proper exercise program and behavior modification program to help people lose weight. Losing weight and preventing from regaining the lost weight can help reduce the risk of many issues obesity causes such as heart diseases, diabetes, hypertension and certain forms of cancer.
Vyfat is usually taken orally up to 3 times per day or as directed by a doctor. It should be taken with or within 1 hour of any main meal that contains fat. If you skip a meal or eat a meal that does not contain any fat, skip the dose for that meal. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy.
Patients using Vyfat may encounter unwanted side effects such as: oily spotting on underwear or clothing, oily or fatty stools, urgent need to have bowel movement, flatulence, headaches, nausea, irregular menstrual periods.
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as: tooth and gum problems, anxiety, difficulty breathing or swallowing, jaundice, rectal pain or bleeding, stomach pain
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Vyfat is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
